DEATH OF THE HON. D. H. GUTHRIE.
Alastcrton, This Day. The Hon. D. H. Guthrie, M.L.C., died to-day, aged 71 years. The late Hon. David Henry Guthrie, M.L.C., was born at Abbeylqix, Ireland, on July 12th, 1856. He arrived in New Zealand in 1876, and was engaged in school teaching foiv 26 years, mostly under the Wanganui Education Board, of which he was a member for 10 ’years. He took up farming in the Kiwitea County Council, and a proof the Rangiwhaia Dairy Co., and for six years was chairman of the Kikitea County Council, and a prominent member of the Farmers’ Union. ITe entered Parliament as member for Oroua in 1908, and continued as Alember for that electorate until his retirement at lastGoneral Election. He was elected whip of the then Opposition, and joined the National Cabinet in February, 1918, as Alinister of Lands. In 1924 he was appointed Alinister without portfolio owing to illhealth. He was subsequently appointed to the Upper House. The Hag at the local post office was flown at half-mast to-day as a mark of respect ot the memory of the late Hon. D. 11. Guthrie.
