FOOTBALL.
Some groundless rumours were circulated to the effect that a number of Foxton club players were pulling out to join other clubs. It was also stated that the old “yellow and blacks” were going out of business. The object of this rumour was to unsettle players. It is pleasing to state that the club this year will be a-s virile as ever. The dub juniors promise well this year and the thirds and fourths should put strong combinations in the field. An effort will be made to erect a suitable dressing shelter on the racecourse. In this connection it is hoped that financial assistance will be— forthcoming from other sources than the Foxton club. The Awahou club has nominated teams for all the grades, so that Foxton will be well combed for players this season. The Foxton juniors are looking forward to a good game with Berhampore at Wellington during Easter. A dash between these two clubs is always looked to with pleasure and the local boys will be assured of a good time in the Empire City. A meeting of all interested in the formation of a Wednesday club will be held in Walls’ rooms to-night ai 7.30 o’clock.
The Foxton seniors last year were severely handicapped through the loss of several of their prominent players and they had to rely on juniors to fill the gaps in order to meet their engagements. It is hoped that the yellow and blacks will have hotter luck this year in ’the senior division.
Mr. H. Hutchins, supervising coach of the Foxton Club, gave an informative talk to players last night.
It is evident that the Wairarapa Rugby Union will he in a position to make a serious bid for the Ranfurly Shield this season, observes the “Wairarapa Daily Times.” Four of Hawke’s Bay’s most prominent players in A. E. Cooke, W. R. Irvine, W. Barclay, and A. Falwasser, it is reported, will turn out for Wairarapa this season. These, with the loeial men, Q. Donald and 1. 11. Harvey, will give Wairarapa six New Zealand representative players this season. This should prove a splendid ground work to build a side upon. Barclay and Falwasser were members of the Maori Rugby team, which has just returned from a tour of Great Britain and France. The latter was acclaimed by English and French authorities as one of the most brilliant scoring wing-three-quarters in the world to-day. Cooke Irvine, Q. Donald and Harvey were members of the 1924 All Black team which toured Great Britain, France, and Canada with an unbeaten record.
