ROYAL VISITORS IN PALMERSTON NORTH.

ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION. The Duke and Duchess of York arrived in Palmerston North about 5.45 on Thursday afternoon and were accorded a most enthusiastic reception. The visitors were accommodated at the Grand Hotel and (lid not appear officially again that night. Yesterday morning the town was astir early and a large crowd soon gathered around the band rotunda in the Square where the civic welcome was to be accorded Their Royal Highnesses. At 9.15 the Duke and Duchess appeared at the door of the hotel where the Royal car was waiting but this they dismissed preferring to walk the distance and inspect the school children. The inspection lasted 1 fully twenty minutes. After the ceremony the Duke and Duchess drove to the station and hoarded the Royal Train cn route for Napier. At Dannevirke a stop of ten minutes was made and the Royal Party detrained at Hastings for a short time. The night was spent in Napier. i This morning the Party left for Millington via the Wairarapa, ar-' riving in Wellington this afternoon. ’ A large number of local residents journeyed to Palmerston on Thursday afternoon to see the Duke and Duchess and a special train was run to Palmerston that even- j| ing, returning the same night. Yesterday morning the elder children of the local State School visited Palmerston North by special train, leaving here at 7 a.m. and returning again at 3.30 p.m. A large number of local residents were also present at the reception in the morning. The Mayor (Mr M. E. i’erreau) and Mayoress represented Foxton on the dais at the civic reception accorded the Duke and Duchess of York and had the pleasure of shaking hands with them at the conclusion, of the ceremony. The seven cars connected with the Royal tour passed through Foxton at midday yesterday on their, way to Wellington and were the centre of local interest during their short, stop here. .
