MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.

MONTHLY MEETING

Tho Manawatu County Council met at Sanson yesterday, Cr. W. 15. Barber (chairman), presiding. There were also present Crs. W. Pearce, H. J. Fagan, J. McKelvie, D. W. Reid, J. 'Boyce and 11. H. Hunt. CORRESPONDENCE. ' Prom the New Zealand Counties’ Association advising that the Public Works Department has under consideration an amendment to the .Motor-Lorry Regulations, providing that fines following prosecutions taken by officers of any local bodies, be paid to the credit of the local body concerned. —Reply considered very satisfactory and the council hoped that the necessary legislation would be approved of. From Main Highways Board regarding the payment of subsidy towards the cost of boundary roads and pointing out that counties,were entitled to the usual Statutory maintenance contribution on expcnj diture in so far as it affected its section, while the borough was entitled to a contribution based on the expenditure by the county. Received.

From New Zealand Railways, agreeing to have . mile pegs on the Longburn-Foxton line shifted .from their present position to the other side of the track—Received. From the Foxton Borough Council, reporting that the council proposed to undertake certain tarsealing work and asking whether the county would be prepared to share the cost should the boundary roads be done. —Referred to the county engineer for report. From the Horowhenua Electric Power Board, stating that the cost of erecting two lights at the Shannon punt would be £24, and the. charge for current would be £3 17s Gd per year.—Resolved to accept the offer of the Board to erect the lights, provided the Highways Board sanctioned the expenditure. From F. S. Easton, complaining as to the state of the road to the Mill Drain.—Decided to inform Mr Easton that the matter js being attended to. Another letter from Mr Easton complaining about the .bridge over the Main Drain was referred to the engineer for a report. From the New Zealand Loan am Mercantile Co., objecting to the payment of £3 3/- for a license for the Hiraitangi sale yards.—Decided that a rebate of £2 2/- be granted. From Abraham and Williams, ob-‘ jecting to the payment of £3 3/for n license for the Foxton sale yards,— Decided to grant a rebate of £2 2/-. From the settlers of Tangimoana, petitioning the council to form Nuku Street—Resolved that as soon as the Public Works Department have approved of plans and specilications for roads at Tangimoana, the engineer be... authorised to call tenders for the work. RATE POSITION.

The rate collector reported that , of the £12,(145 collectible for rates, approximately £8,189 has been paid, leaving outstanding £4,464. The amount paid was approximately £6OO less than was collected last year. It was resolved to add the 10 per cent, penalty on all rates out- , standing after March 10th. GENERAL BUSINESS. It was decided to apply to the Minister of Finance for permission to raise a loan of £SOO for the construction of Leen’s Line. The question of repairs to Himitangi cottage was left in the hands of the chairman, Crs. Boyce and McKelvie and the engineer, with power to act. It was resolved to purchase a set of load-o-meters for the use of the county’s inspector. ALTERATIONS TO RATE ROLL The following alterations were made on the Rate Roll: Mary Ann Coleman to A. D. Wiebby, sec. 78 Tangknoana. Ex. Est. T. Harris to T Sanson, Pt. See. 17, Sandon; C. H. T. Bowater to E- J- Bowater, lot 188 Sanson. Township. TRAMWAY MANAGER’S REPORT The tramway manager reported on the working of the tramway for the month of January, as follows: The chief items of traffic of the month were: Grain 31i tons,.minerals and manure 86i tons, general merchandise 36 f tons, stock 70 trucks, metal 82 trucks, wool 140 bales, eggs 78 crates, fares amounted to £7 12/4. The accounts show a debit balance of £BB 15/11 for the month’s -working. ENGINEER’S REPORT. Awahou Riding.—Metal had been delivered and repairs carried out oh the Shannon and other roads in this district. The metal required for Riding roads would be about 450 cubic yards for the current year, and the total cost would be approximately £341. TRAFFIC INSPECTOR’S REPORT An inspection was made of the roads in regard to cutting of gorse and lupins, and fair headway is being made. Where final notices had been sent and no steps had been taken to cut down the gorse and lupins, it was suggested that proceedings should he taken against the offenders. A few head of stray stock had been found on the road lately and the offenders had been summoned. Nine hopes were brought to thg pound from Ohakea and they were later claimed by natives from Bulls. A traffic taljy was taken from the 20th January to the 30th January, between Sanson and Bulls bridge, and the result shows a daily average of 308 cars, 42 light and heavy ' lorries, 38 service cars, and 36 motor cycle.—Received.
