THE WEATHER.
The Government Meteorologist wired at noon to-day as follows; — Indications are for northerly winds, moderate to strong prevailing and freshening. Expect warm and sultry weather. Increasing haze and cloudiness for change. 'Barometer unsteady, with a falling tendency. Seas moderate, tides pour.
The Levin Co-operative Dairy Company will pay out 1/3 per lb. of butter fat for cream of the highest grade supplied during January. This is the same figure as the advance for the previous month. The Bishop of London, who is making a world tour, will arrive in Wellington by the Makura from Sydney on Monday, February 28. On the following Wednesday he will leave for Auckland. During his short stay in Wellington he will give an address in the Town ITall on Empire settlement.
The Hon. Edward Newman, M.L.C., paid a brief visit to Foxton to-day. In, conversation with our representative, Mr Newman said the future prosperity of the Dominion would depend to a great extent upon the cutting up of large cslalcs for closer .settlement, and added facilities to place desirable pimple on the land. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Gas Institute in Wellington on Wednesday, Harold Beauchamp, chairman of directors of the Wellington Gas Company, laid stress on the fact that in spile of the competition of electricity, gas was more than holding its own, more, of course, in the direction of heating and power than as an illuminant. The high cost of hydro-elec-tricity undertakings partly accounted for this.
The Karioi sheep station, which the Government proposes to plant its a forest reserve for tile future, will be taken over from the owner, Mr. W, Duncan, on April 1. Originally pari of a vast run held by Mr. J. Studliolme, of Canterbury, Karioi eoCers a wide tract of’counIry, largely volcanic plains, and is considered by •many to be too good for sacrifice to alforcstation. Many farmers in the locality, where the land is being steadily improved through the employment of sound methods, believe Karioi should he i ill up for closer settlement.
