Manawatu Herald SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 1927. WARNING TO SURF BATHERS.
YESTERDAY'S drowning fatality at the local ocean beach should serve as a warning' to bathers against, attempting to go beyond the first line of breakers on the ebb tide. The safest time to indulge in sea. bathing is when the tide is making or at the full. This warning we have published time and again and probably it is heeded by local people but there .is urgent, necessity Cor a danger warning to be erected on the ocean beach, as a safety guide to strangers. It has been suggested that a red flag should be hoisted at the signal station indicating the dangerous period on Sundays and at other times when there is an inllttx of visitors to the seaside, to be supplemented by warning notices at the river foreshore, and along the ocean beach. We suggest that the Harbour Board should take this matter up. There is a life-saving reel at the locality but there are no experienced persons in charge of it. The reason for this being flint there are very few young men, resident at 1 lie seaside who could form a club. Perhaps the local swimming club could discuss the question of forming a surf life-saving dub? Accidents of ibis nature are regrettable and prejudicial to the popularity of our seaside, which could bo avoided if the above suggestions were carried out.
