ARTILLERY CAMP.
Live-shell practice was indulged in by the 19th Battery encamped on the racecourse yesterday. The four six-inch howitzers were hauled into position at the rear of the Target Reserve by the Holt tractors and the first shots were fired about 11 a.m. The shoot took place over Robinson’s lakes in a north-wester-ly direction. Tim target was out of sight of the guns, the range, etc., being supplied by O.Pip, the observing station which was located on the hill at the rear of Mr. F. Robinson’s residence in Beach Road, from where the target eould be observed with field glasses. At O.Pip, the range is worked out and signalled to the guns by means of field wire-' less. “Flag Wagging” is also indulged in at! times. Behind the battery was a canteen cart from which the men were able to procure refreshments, etc. Tho shooting yesterday was of a good standard, the last four shots observed from the top of the hill at the -rear of the Target Reserve appearing to land all in the one spot. Two Lewis guns are attached to this battery and yesterday practice was also indulged in with these weapons on the rifle range. Two official photographers from the Publicity Department paid a visit to the camp yesterday and took some moving pictures of camp life. GALA DAY TO-DAY. The camp was en ,fete this afternoon, when an “at home” was held on the. racecourse.! When a large, number of people took advantage of the fine day to visit the camp. Admission was by purchase of a military button and various forms of amuse r ment were arranged by the men to entertain the visitors and raise Hinds for their queen candidate (Miss Norwood) in the forthcoming queen carnival, to be held in Wellington. A tabloid sports programme was also arranged and not least among the attractions of the afternoon were the “joy rides” on the Holt tractors. Afternoon tea was provided and a most enjoyable time was spent by all present.
On Monday evening the men of the 19th Battery will hold an Artillery dance in the Masonic Hall. Special music will be supplied by the Battery Jazz Band. The catering arrangements are in the hands of Walls and the floor is in good order, so a good time may be anticipated. Elsewhere in this issue the Battery advertise for the hire of about forty .horses for use in connection with the camp. For particulars apply at the camp. CHURCH PARADE. ■ The 19th Battery wifi then parade at All Saints’ Church at 11 a.in. to-morrow. Owing to the hot weather the service wifi be held in the Church grounds. Seats wifi be provided fay parishioners. , Owing to sickness and other causes the Foxton Silver Band will not be able to parade on Sunday, but they hope to do so later on for other Camps.
