LINER HITS A WHALE.

UNUSUA L ACCI DENT REPORTED

The R.M.S. Maunganui, which arrived at Wellington early, yesterday morning from Sydney, had the remarkable accident of colliding with a whale early the same morning. This is the second whale the vessel has run into during the past few weeks, for on a recent trip from Sydney to Auckland she hit a whale. Yesterday morning, about 2 o’clock, when the ship was between Stephen Island and The Brothers light-, house, the officer and men on watch felt a slight impact. Investigation was made, and it was seen that the stem of the vessel had cut into the body of a good-sized cetacean. The engines were put slow astern in order to clear the obstacle, and the ship sustained no damage.
