CROQUET.
N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIPS
LOCAL REPRESENTATIVE’S FINE PERFORMANCE.
At the New Zealand Croquet Championships which have been in progress at Palmerston N. since the 21st inst., and which will conclude to-day, the local club was represented by Mrs McMurray, and she is to be complimented upon the excellent performances put up against the Domiuion’s best. In the ladies’ championship Mrs McMurray defeated two of the Dominion’s foremost players, viz., Airs H. Kibblewhite (24) of Hamilton, 26 —18 and Airs Tiffen (4), Napier, 26 —20. The latter game was started at 8.30 a.m. and finished at 11.15, and attracted a crowd of spectators. Airs Tiifen made a break of nine and succeeded in pegging out one of her opponent’s-balls, the other ball having still one hoop to make. Profiting by experience gained earlier in the tournament, Airs AlcMurray, after a successful long shot, drove one of her opponent’s balls to the hoop, and, failing to get position, she wired, and in her next turn made the hoop and pegged out from a very long shot. The winner was greeted by rounds .of applause and congratulations.
In the third round of the second draw, Mrs McMurray lost to Mrs McDowell (13),'0f Wellington, 26 14, and in the fourth round of the first draw to Mrs Maddren (1), of Christchurch, 26 —5. In the Handicap Doubles, Mesdames McMurray and McDonald reached the semi-finals and in the B grade handicap singles Mrs McMurray lost, in the semi-final, to-the winner of the event, Airs Horner, of Patea, 26 —18. Airs Alcilurray was called upon to play three games in one day, a very trying ordeal.
