FIRST DAY.

CUP TO OPA,

ANNIVERSARY HANDICAP TO

FIRST ACRE.

AWAPUNI FURNISHES A SUR-

PRISE

Ladv Passenger, Little River and Captain Wai declined their engagements ill the Poroutawliao Hack Hurdles, the good field ot 11 runners nevertheless remaining. Ihe locallytrained Elvaette was elected favourite, the Ghoorka gelding being entrusted with 152 tickets more than Banjuke, with a drop of GO odd tickets to Santonio and Gurnion. Banjuke was the first to show out from an indifferent start, Sir Pam being the last to move. The leader, with Asleep, Purseproud and Axle raced together to the turn into the straight on the first time round. Passing the stand Ardath came up to the leading division and entering the back had secured a two lengths advantage from Banjuke, Axle, Santomo and Gurnion. Turing for home Ardath was still in the van from Banjuke, Santouio, Asleep and Gurnion with the favourite coming up.' Nothing had a chance witlr the Awapumtrained candidate, Ardath going on to win by a good ten lengths from Elavctte, who got up in time to take second honours from Gurnion by half a length, with heads separating Gurnion, Asleep and Anchor.

ANOTHER OUTSIDER PREVAILS

Lin Arlington, Molto, The Swell, Coot and \\ henanui, the majority of whom claimed engagements later in the day, were withdrawn from the Himatangi Hack Handicap in which Sandlnirr was a £29 better favourite than Lady Cynthia, with even support

for the other runners. Moepai delayed the start, but when the tapes were finally lifted the field left in gooil line, Lady Cynthia being the first to show out, only to almost immediately give way to ( Volplane, Moepai and Dominion Hose. Hounding the bend for home Dominion Hose and Lady Cvnthia were together, just ahead of Moepai and Wilderness, with Sandburr coming up on the outside. With heads straightened out Wilderness came through on the rails and was never seriously troubled, winning by a good length with half a length separating Sandlmrr from Lady Cynthia. Then came a gap of three lengths to Moepai. This made the second success of the outsider of the field, although the evenness of the betting curtailed the. price when compared with the previous event. OPA’S SECOND CUP. The' defection of Merry Day, Bonhornrne, Buoyant and Stream reduced the field to a bare seven runners in the Cup, Ngata being a £147 better favourite than Tiega, with good support forthcoming for the other runners. The field was sent away on their mission in excellent line, Tiega being the leader rounding the bend into tire straight from Panart, Bent and Peneus, but passing the standsPeneus had taken charge from Opa, Tiega, Panart, Bent,. Nukumai and Ngata. Going along the back Tiega dashed to the front from Peneus and Opa. Nukumai and Ngata, who had been in the rear, also improving their positions. Immediately following. Opa wrested the command and landed first into the straight from Tiega, Ngata and Nukumai. Last year’s winner drew out in the run to the post to win by two and a half lengths with Nuknmai a good half length clear of Ngata. Panart and Bent came very fast over the last pinch, noses separating them from Ngata. BISSAC OPENS HIS ACCOUNT. . The cumbersome field of 17 runners went to the post in the Novice Stakes, Starbird, Gordon Swift and Teremoana being the only defections. Rising Star, on the strength of his second to Horomea at Awapuni; was .sent out a firrm ‘ favourite, carrying 200 tickets more than than Petal, the second elect, with a drop of 21 tickets to Bissac, several of the runners being almost totally neglected. Following a delay in getting the field into line Vast Acre, Petal and Miss Pat were the smartest to begin, but with a furlong, gone Abbey Queen ranged up alongside the leading division and was actually first into the straight from Petal, Rising Star and Vast, Acre. The leader was quickly finished with, leaving Rising Star in command with Petal, but Bissac came with a late challenge to get np and secure the victory from the favourite by half a length, with Petal beaten into third place a length back. Vast. Aero was fourth a neck away. BANK DRAFT’S GOOD EFFORT.

Asleep. Rising Star and Sandburr, all of whom lmd previously figured on the programme, were withdrawn from the Awaliou Hack Handicap, in which Vivo was sent out a £9O better favourite than Bank Draft, with a drop of were the first out at the hairier rise, £B3 to Hymextrason. Vivo and Twink being immediately joined by Hymestrason, and the trio led from Bank Draft and Empire Camp all' the way into the straight, where Bank Draft made a forward move and was actually in the lead when beads were straightened out, Vivo, Twink and Empire Camp being next in attendance. The leader maintained his advantage to secure the verdict comfortably by a length, with Vivo a head in front of Empire Camp. Hymestrason was fourth, with Twink and Brigadier Bill next. FIRST ACRE TAKES ANNIVERSARY. Royal Damon and Bemnure declined their engagements in the Anniversary Handicap, the second leg of the double, leaving 10 runners to fulfill their engagement. Mireusonta was elected a firm favourite from First Acre, a matter of 120 tickets separating the pair on the machine, with a drop of £l5O to Pnpaponga. When the tapes were lifted Bonideer dashed to the front from Gleninnis, Mireusonta and First Acre, with Beaumont bringing up the rear. Rounding the bend for home the field had closed on tile leader, and, when in the straight, Mireusonta, First Acre and Bonideer were in line, Gleninnis having steadily drifted back. First Acre drew out, and although Bonogne came up fast, the Hawera candidate could not get closer than half a length, with Mireusonta a neck ahead of Birkic, who showed surprising pace over the last portion of the journey. Papaponga was next, followed by Buoyant. AN EASY WIN Grand Lupin, Strongholt and Waramu declined their engagements in the Marotiri Hack Handicap, in which the two Awapuni representatives, Powlnri and Lin Arlington, were selected by the public as their fancies, the former being entrusted with £153 more than the latter. However, the selection again proved astray, for Whenuanui went to the front immediately following the release of the tapes and remained there to win easily by a good five lengths. ’Whenuanui was the smartest to begin .and early opened up an advantage from Coot and Break o’ Day, the more fancied division being in .the ruck. At the straight entrance the leader was still well clear,; Powhiri and Lin Arlington having improved their positions, as had Grand National and Bonny Louisa. Whenuanui did not leave the issue in doubt, for the Acre gelding extended his lead to five lengths in the run to the post, Grand National coming away fast to take second honours by two lengths from Lin Arlington. Bonny Louisa was fourth, with Molto next. A FAVOURITE TO FINISH. Vivo was the sole absentee from the Herrington Handicap, in which Bonhomme was made a better favourite than Diamond Ring, with Royal Diadem third choice. No delay was entailed in sending them off on their mission, Royal Diadem and Bonhomme being first out, with Misgovern next, and the latter went to the front going along the back. Royal Diadem, however, reassumed charge before the straight was reached, Bonhomme, Misgovern, Shut Eye and Stream being next in order. With heads straightened out for home Bonhomme went up to the leader, and although the latter responded, he could not hold the Panmure gelding, Bonhomme winning by a short length from Nukumai, who again came with a strong finishing run, in third place a clear length back. Next to finish was Diamond Ring. RACING IN DETAIL. POROUTAWIIAO HACK HURDLES, of 160 sovs., second horse 30 so vs., and third

SECOND DAY.

OPA WINS PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP.

WH A RANG I HANDICAP TO BONOGNE.

BUOYANT’S SUCCESS IN MOUTOA HANDICAP.

There was again a large ‘attendance of the public at Foxton. Though the fields were slightly reduced as compared with the opening day, interesting racing was nevertheless forthcoming, favourites having a better run than on the previous day, three of that order gaining major honours. As on the opening day Opa accounted for the opposition in the big event — the President’s Handicap—the Woodville representative coming away at the business end to win nicely by a length, tlie double success proving very popular with the public. The sprint honours went to Bonogne, whose finishing effort of the previous day had indicated better things and of which the public fully availed themselves. Awapuni mentors enjoyed two victories at the fixture, L. Knapp winning the initial event with Ardath, while H. H. Doyle brought the meeting to a close by winning with his reeent purchase, Buoyant. ANCHOR TAKES THE HURDLES.

All six candidates carded in the Paiaka Hack Hurdles paraded, Elvaette, who had filled second place on the opening day, being elected a firm favourite from Banjuke, 150 tickets separating the pair on the totalisator with a further drop of £l7O to Cracker Day. At the release oLthe tapes Banjuke was first out from Cracker Day, Anchor, Purseproud and Elvaette anil, although Banjuke was oufjumping Cracker Day, the latter was holding a slight advantage passing the stands, Empire Camp being on Banjuke’s quarters with the others in rough line. Going away from home Anchor moved in behind Cracker Day and Banjuke and actualjy assumed command in the hack straight, Empire Camp and Elvaette also making a forward move. Turning for home Anchor was still in the van with Empire Camp and Elvaette next, Banjuke having drifted ns had Cracker Day, the last-named having gone hack to the rear. With heads straightened out Empire Camp and Elvaette set out in pursuit of the leader, but Anchor retained his advantage to win nicely by a length and a-quarter with Elvaette four lengths back. Purseproud finished strong enough to head off Banjuke, with Cracker Day well back. WHENUANUI WINS AGAIN. Wilderness declined his engagement in the Whirokino Hack Handicap leaving 10 runners to go to the pst, 1 Whenuanui, a winner of the first day,

being installed a £133 better favourite than Grand National, with Lin Arlington 78 tickets lesser fancied. At the release of the tapes Grand Lupin, who was the outsider of the field, jumped to the front from Grand National, Whenuanui, Dominion Hose and Lin Arlington, the other runners being bunched. At the turn for home Grand Lupin, was still showing the way from Whenuanui, Lady Cynthia and Grand National, hut with heads straightened out Whenuanui ran up to the leader and went on to win comfortably by two and a-half lengths, with Lady Cynthia a neck behind Grand Lupin. OPA TAKES PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP.

Nukumai was withdrawn from the President’s Handicap, the big flat event for the day, leaving a bare two dividend field. Opa, on the strength of his comfortable victory on the first day, was elected favourite, the Woo rtf'ill e representative carrying 10 tickets more than Ngata, with a drop of 160 . odd tickets to Bonhomme and Pencils. Panart and Bonhomme were the leaders passing through the straight with Peneus. Ngata, Stream and Opa next. The order did not undergo any change entering the back, but approaching the four furlong post Opa commenced hi make tip his leewey and was actually in the van at the straight entrance, Peneus and Ngata being next. Bonhomme and Panart having drifted slightly. In the run to the post Peneus went-in pursuit of Opa, but the Cup winner held his advantage to pass the post with a length to the good. Ngata promised to put forward a. bid for honours at the bottom of the straight, but the veteran could not go on with it, Panart coming again to annex third honours a neck ahead of Bonhomme with Ngata another neck away. BONOGNE IMPROVES. The withdrawal of Beaumont left a seven horse event in the Wharangi Handicap, the big sprint for the day, Bonogno and Mireusonta carrying almost half the totalisator investment money, a matter of £l2B separating Bonogno frem Mireusonta, with a drop of almost £3OO to First Acre and the others very lightly backed. Shuteye delayed the start and when the harrier was finally lifted lie was turned ilre reverse way and took no part in the race, to the discomfort of his 83 hackers. Misgovern was the smartest to begin and led from Mireusonta, First. Acre, Birkie and Bongone to the turn where First Acre and the favourite improved their positions. Misgovern who. however, still in otlie van at the straight, entrance from First Acre, Mireusonta and Bonogno. the lastnamed coming up fast.. Tn the straight Bonogno drew up to the leader and, although Misgovern responded to pressure. the favourite had her measure urn! held a neck advantage at the post. Find Acre and Miss llupana wore together next, with Mireusonta and Birkie light up.

MISS PAT OPENS HER ACCOUNT

Ten of the 11 candidates for honours in the Maiden event made their appearance. Gordon Swift being the sole absentee.. Abbey Queen was selected by the public as their first choice, the Quin Alihoy mare being entrusted with almost twice the sum invested on the second elect. Miss Pat. with Rasli a further 80 tickets away. Mists Pat was the smartest, to begin, Arrow hoy, Abbey Queen, Doc, Waramu being next in attendance. The. order underweni little change among the leading division to the straight entrance where .Miss Pat was still clear of Abbey Queen. Marainu and Laiidguard, Arrow Hoy having disappeared into tlie ruck. Abbey'Queen went in pursuit of the leader, hut Miss Pat responded to pressure and was going away at the post, a length, and a quarter separating the pair as they flashed under the wire. Laiidguard was two lengths hack, with Morrrv Sarto next. A COMFORTABLE VICTORY. \ Klvaette. who had made an appearance in the hurdles, declined his engagement iii the Carnarvon Hack Handicap in which Vivo was elected a £l6B better favourite tliqn Our Jack with Bent next in demand, 14 tickets away. The field Was sent away in good line from which Vivo was the first to show up. Takaroa, Our Jack and Lieutenant Bill being in rough line, with Petal in behind on the rails next. The leading quartette held their positions along tire hack till at the four furlong post. Bent made a forward move and. assuming command, was actually first into the straight from Our Jack, Lieutenant Bill. and Vivo, with Everest moving 'up fast. Our Jack immediately lodged a challenge and under pressure overtook Bent and went on to pass the post two lengths to the good. Lieutenant Bill being a length behind Bent with necks separating Vivo. Twink and Everest. WILDERNESS SCORES AGAIN/ Whenuanui and Arclioh declined their engagements in the Rangiotu Hack Handicap in which the public went solidly for Bank Draft, the Paper, Money gelding being entrusted with almost twice as much as the second elect, Hymestrason, Wilderness carrying 54 tickets less than the latter, the other investments being very light. Fractiousness at the post led to a very indifferent dispatch, Hymestraspn being first out from Molto, Moepai, Wilderness, Gold Raugi, Bank Draft and Calluna. Racing along the hack Moepai, Hymestrason and Wilderness were together, ahead of a well bunched field, but rounding, the bend Wilderness went to the front, the order at the straight entrance being Wilderness. Hymestrason, Molto, Moepai and 1 Bank Draft. Moepai challenged, hut could not make any impression on the leader, who passed the post three lengths to the good, with Calluna a length and a quarter hack. Next to finish were Bank Draft, Molto and Bonny Louisa, all being close up. AN AWAPUNI VICTORY. First Acre, Bonhomme and Misgovern, all of whom had made previous appearances, were absentees from the' Moutoa Handicap, the final event of the meeting. Royal Diadem was sent out favourite in a good betting race, the Polydamon geld ng carrying 247 tickets more than Tougatotoa, with Papaponga 39 tickets away. Brigadier Bill was first out from the tapes, hut early gave way to Tougatotoa, with Royal Diadem.’Papaponga and March On next, Beaumont, Buoyant and Polyphemus being together in the rear. Approaching the turn the field closed up, Royal Diadem moving up to the leaders and being actually first into the straight. With heads straightened the other runners wore in rough line. Royal Diadem appearing to be the winner at that stage. However, Buoyant and Beaumont came with a great run and. passing the leader, came right away to open up a break in the run to the post, Buoyant winning by a length and a quarter, with the favourite' four lengths behind Beaumont. Papaponga was fourth, while Polyphemus, Brigadier Bill, March On and 1 Tougatotoa wore at close intervals / RACING TN DETAIL.
