INFLUENZA.
INCREASE IN ENGLAND. During the week-end the Minister of Health (Hon. J. A. Young) received a cablegram from the high Commissioner for New Zealand (Sir James Parr), stating that the influenza figures show an increase in the number of deaths in England. In 105 great towns, including London, there were 326 deaths for the week ending January 15. There were 137 deaths in the county of London, and 233 in Greater'London. Notifications of pneumonia totalled 1867, a slight decrease being shown. Reports received from the Ministry of Health indicated some increase in the prevalence of influenza, particularly in the larger centres of population, So far London has been chiefly affected. The type of disease is mild, and complications are rare, and confined principally to children and the aged. On the Qontinent -there is practially no change. Influenza is prevalent in Franco. In Switzerland it is decreasing, but Germany reports an increase in influenza cases of a generally mild type. Although Europe generally is effected, influenza is not prevalent is Austria and the Irish Free State.
