DECEMBER GRADING RETURNS
The grading returns for hem]), tow, stripper tow and stripper slips for the month of December have been issued by the Department of Agriculture as follows:
The detailed particulars of the hemp graded are:—
One bale at Wellington was graded Slip. Fine. Seventy-three bales at Picton were graded fine. Thirtythree bales at Auckland, 90 at Wellington, 85 at Foxton and 5 at Lyttelton were rejected. The number of bales in each grade were as follows, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:—Sup. Fine 1, (nil), fine 73 (138), good fair 845 (715), high fair 4624 (4463), low fair 2725 (3306), common 773 (8.10), rejected 213 (345), a total of 9254 bales against 9873 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 529 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland 1879'' Wellington 2979, Foxton 1991, Wairoa 170, Picton 87, Blenheim 261, Dunedin 159, Pt. Chalmers 323, Bluff 1253, Lyttelton 152. The following shows the detailed particulars of the tow: —
Twenty-three bales at Auckland, 14 at Wellington, 3 at Foxton and 3 at Lyttelton were condemned. The following shows the number of bales in each grade, the number for the corresponding period of last year being given in parenthesis:— lsl grade 350 (403), 2nd grade 1596 (1620), 3rd grade 458 (533), condemned 43 (46), a total of 2747 bales against 2611 bales, an increase of 136 bales. The number of bales graded at each port were: —Auckland 577, Wellington 721, Foxton 434, Wairoa 48, Picton 38, Blenheim 103, Pt. Chalmers 124, Bluff 560, Lyttelton 13, Dunedin !), Waikuku 120. Stripper tow: —Sixteen bales at Wellington and 100 at Foxton were graded 2nd grade, a total of 116 bales as against 382 bales, graded the same period last year, a decrease of 266 bales. Stripper slips:—Seven bales at Auckland, 54 at Wellington, 40 at Wairoa and 122 at the Bluff! were graded 2nd grade. One bale at Auckland, 18 at Wellington and 27 at the Bluff! were passed for export. The total number graded was 269 hales against 408 bales graded the same period last year, a decrease of 139 bales. HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. The High Commissioner’s cable, dated the Bth inst., reads: “Manila market is easier this week, but closed with firmer tone. “J” grade, January-March shipments, quoted at £46 10/-. The output last year was 1,254,259 bales, against 1,241,078 bales in the previous year. The stocks in Great Britain on Ist January were 3,000 bales, against 25,000 last year. Stocks iipjffanila were 115,000 bales against 153,000 for the same time last year. Sisal market dull; No. 1 Tanganyika offered at £4l 5/-. New Zealand market is easier, with sellers, high points, at £37 for any position; fair, JanuaryMarch shipments, £36; buyers afloat for fair £36 5/- to £36 10/-; tow afloat in demand on the basis of £26 for No. 2 quality.
