MUSIC IN PRIMARY SCHOOLS
INTRODUCTION OF GENUINE MAORI AIRS. Music in the primary schools of New Zealand is gradually being put ou a sound basis by Mr. Fj. D. Taylor, the director of music in schools. A collection of genuine Maori airs has been arranged by Mr Alfred Hill, formerly of Wellington, and now on the Sydney Consorvaturium staff, and Mr. Taylor intends to introduce these into the Dominion schools during the present year. The songs include “Poi Paritircti" (gliding poi song), “He Waiata Amlin” (a love song), “Nonsense Song,” “Two Poi Songs,” “Poi Wake” (canoe song), “Tili Tovea” (stick- throwing song), and “The Locust Song.” All are claimed to be genuine Maori melodies, to which only a set musical form has been given bv Mr. Hill. Another, and perhaps the best-known and most popular, is “Pokare Rare,” which has splendid rhythm and a catchy melody.
