CORRESPONDENCE.
(To The Editor). Sir, —In the last issue of the Herald,, mention was made of the bad state of the Foxton-Sandon road and the Foxton-Levin road. While I quite agree that these roads are in a state of disrepair, are they any worse, in comparison, with the Fox-ton-Palmerston N. road, which is a continuation of ruts and ridges right through to Longhorn? We motor people are paying a pretty stiff tax, beside property rates for the upkeep of our roads, and as I understand a proportion of the former revenue comes back to the counties for road construction, how is it that the roads are allowed to get into such a rotton condition? Would it not be better to abolish County Councils and supplant them with a Council of experts for the whole of the Island. The work would then be systematised, and carried out more thoroughly. It seems to me the height of absurdity to see men on the highways throwing gravel into wits with a shovel , and the meial pushed out again by the first car that comes along. The men who constitute our County Councils may know all about butter-fat, and general farming, but when it comes to road construction, they only waste time. T am not alone, sir, in the opinion that County Councils as at present constituted, have passed their stage of usefulness. —Thanking you in anticipation,
MOTORIST AND RATEPAYER
