— STRANGE STORY OF CRIME TN FRANCE. Paris, January 1. An amazing story is told in connection with the discovery of the body of Francis Halama, a young married man who was found hanging head downwards from a tree in a wood near Beauvais. It was at first thought lie had caught his foot in a cleft between the branches' while climbing, and had been unable to release himself. It lias now been disclosed by a Russian working in the same factory that a Terrorist custom, known as the Torture of the Tree, still prevailed, and is practised against any member of the band who betrays his comrades. The practice is to wedge a man's leg in the fork of a tree so that lie cannot possibly release himself and to leave him to perish. The police have come to the conclusion that Halama was a victim |o' this torture. Six arrests have been made.
