PUBLIC SWIMMING BATHS.
IT is to he hoped that the. public meeting; to lie held to-night will definitely wind-up the swimming baths question. The public has generously contributed, per medium of the protracted carnival effort, the sum of over £OOO for baths and should be relieved from any further iinanoial calls on that behalf. We hope that point will be made clear. The completion of the scheme should now be transferred to the local governing authority and to that end the amount raised should be transferred to the Council. As to a suitable site, a previous public meeting decided upon Easton Park, but the recommendation and loan for the purpose were thrown out by the Council, on the ground that the time was not opportune. The Council cannot, and we do not believe they desire to shelve 'the matter now, particularly as the public have contributed the greater part of the finance. In the circumstances, therefore, it would be as well for the Council to finalise both site and control. This suggestion does not preclude the meeting from making any recommendations to the Council on the subject. In any case the public have done their part and should be relieved from any further responsibilities. All interested in the subject should not fail to attend the meeting and express their views in order that their should be unanimity in consummating with the least delay public swimming baths.
