Among those present at the Foxton Methodist Sunday Sehool jubilee meeting on Tuesday evening, was Mr Edmund Osborne, of Palmerston X. The Mayor (Mr Perron u) who presided, and who, by the way, is an ex-pupil of the sehool, referred to Mr Osborne’s eonneetion wifh the sehool as teacher and superintendent in the early days. Mr Osborne was accorded a very hearty welcome by the Mayor. Mr Osliorno feelingly acknowledged the references to himself and expressed pleasure at once more foregathering with old friends. A matriculation candidate at Wanganui on Friday, prior to entering the room where inspector's papers loom large, suffered an indignity, and turning round he brought his athletic skill to work in double quick lime, his opponent being one with a reputation of a knowledge of boxing, It was, said a spectator candidate, a real good go, and when one of the candidates entered the room the supervisor wondered which careless student had so suddenly spilt all the red ink. Both are now. good pals, says the Herald, and wondering who will score top marks in their respective subjects. A. question being asked as to what constituted the item “launch hire,” which was before the Horowlienua Power Board, when accounts were dealt with, the engineer (Mr ,J. A. Smith) stated that this was for taking a cable aeross the Manawalu river below the Wirokino bridge, when the main line was taken to Foxton, and for help at Paiaka. Referring to (he completion of the Levin-Eoxton circuit, the chairman (Mr G. A. Monk) said that it was interesting to know that Levin now had two ways of supply. If the current was cut off on the Ihakara length (Levin-Shan-non), it could lie supplied from Foxton; and oil the other hand Foxton could he supplied from Levin. Mr Smith stated that he had had both lines tried. The chairman remarked that in the matter of a reserve service alone it had paid the Board to complete the Levin-Fox-ton line.

“Dog eat dog” may he only a wellworn phrase, but cannibalism among sharks is well authenticated, another instance occurring at Mannkau Heads recently, reports the Herald. A fisherman, having caught a kahawai off the wharf, consigned it again to the deep attached to a shark lino. On returning to the wharf next morning, the fisherman noticed a.violent agitation at the end of the line and attempted to pull in. But the line proved to he fast and the dinghy was requisitioned to pull out over the spot. Tinfirst object to he disclosed was a 3011). anchor, around which the line was fouled. Then on the free end of the line, and the cause of its frantic gyrations, was found a larg shark. When taken aboard and despatched the shark was found to have swallowed the top half of a smaller shark which had been bitten in two. This smaller shark contained the. original kahawai bait and the hook. To complete “the house that Jack built" the larger shark, which was Ofl. 3in. long and stt. in girth, was found to be a female and to be carrying 19 young. Thus a kahawai had proved Ihc downfall of 21 sharks, old and young.
