BOROUGH HALF-HOLIDAY.

WEDNESDAY ADHERED TO. A time honoured custom was done away with at last night’s Borough Council meeting. For many, many years it has been the custom of the Town Clerk to call a special meeting of the Borough Council just prior to the new year to decide on the half holiday for the ensuing year. Wednesday has always been favoured locally although on one or two occasions endeavours were made to change over to Saturday, but this never found favour with the majority of our city fathers and on each occasion was ruled out in favour of Wednesday. The Clerk pointed out last night that it was not necessary to hold the meeting now as if no meeting was held the Minister of Internal Affairs fixed the day as Iho same as the one that was observed during the preceding year. The Councillors having no desire to attend a. special meeting during the festive season, the matter was left to the Minister to pronounce Wednesday ns the half-dav.
