IMPROVEMENTS TO AVENUE.
ROAD TO BE RE-FORMED. Improvement is to be effected to Avenue Rond, and not lief ore time. This road has been in a bad state for a long time, caused chiefly through the larger foundation stones working through and forming a rough, cobbled surface. This particular road was not included in the loan for roads and footpaths improvement, but at last night’s Council meeting, a letter was read from British Pavements Ltd., submitting a quote of £43 15/- for putting Avenue Road, from Johnston St."to Baker St. in order. The Mayor said he had asked the engineer of British Pavements Ltd. to give him a quote for doing the work with the steam roller. It was proposed to tear up the road and re-grade it, being about 70 chains in all. The Council would provide any more metal required and would do their own grading, but the engineer had consented to supervise the work. Cr. Lucinsky: The quotation is the same as what it would cost the Council for 50 yards of metal. He considered it very reasonable indeed.
Cr. Thompson:. A very wise move. It will he money well spent. The Mayor said the Council was short of funds. The road was not in the loan but if the road was properly fixed up with a steam roller now that the Council had the chance, it would mean a great saving in maintenance later on. Cr. McMurray: If we don t do it now it will cost more than double that figure. Once the steam roller has been over it, it will not be difficult to maintain. Cr. Woods suggested doing as far as the cemetery, but, owing to lack of funds the giiginal distance was adhered to and it was decided to accept the tender. ’
