BOXING.
HOLGATE WINS HIS BOUT. In (Palmerston jNqrth on Saturday night T. Holgate (Foxton) 8.9 met W. Spencer (Palmerston N), 8.11. The first round proved a game of give and; take with most of the giving on Holgate’s side. Holgate stopped some severe blows with his gloves and forearms. Spencer, who lacked experience, was unable to break through a perfect guard and the round went easily in Holgate’s favour.
The second round proved to be a repetition of the first* Holgate, who was coolness personified, did as he liked and his intention to take things easy was very evid'ent. In the third round Spencer made a. gallant attack from his corner and made futile attempts to break through his opponent’s defence during the course of which lie stopped some hard ones. A more experienced boxer would have found just the same difficulty.
Holgate received the only possible decision.
