FOXTON HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

PROBABILITY OF AUTUMN SHOW. A committee meeting of the Foxton Horticultural Society was held in Ross’s Rooms last night, presided over by the President (Mr 1). Christie). Also present were Mosdames P. Easton, Murphy,. Heasman, Barr, McMurray and Messrs Murphy, AY, Nye, R. Hornblow, J. Ross, Poole, Tyer, Peryman, and the secretary (Mrs Moore). Apologks for absence were received from Mrs Baker and Rev. Walton. FINANCIAL STATEMENT. The financial statement in connection with the recent summer show was presented and showed a credit balance of £3 7/8. The President said that the statement showed a very satisfactory state of affairs. Taking the weather conditions into consideration, the show had been very successful, and quite satisfactory. Sweet peas and roses had been weak, but here, ngain, the weather could be blamed and not the exhibitors, for the poor exhibition. Under the circumstances, the show had been very creditable. He predicted a bigger credit balance in the future. Accounts amounting to £32 1/4 were passed for payment. TO ENCOURAGE EXHIBITORS. The secretary suggested that something should bo done to encourage exhibitors in the vegetable section. This section had been poorly patronised for years. The President said that it would he a good idea to appoint someone to make a tour of inspection of cot. tage gardens prior to the shows and to point out to the owners vegetables worth exhibiting. i Mr Peryman suggested including the vegetable section •in the fruit section. The matter was held over until the next meeting. VOTES OF THANKS. The Town Hall Committee was accorded a vote of thanks for the loan of tables for the staging of exhibits; Mr P. W. Goldsmith, Levin for gratis services as judge; and exhibitors and the general public for their patronage of the show. AN AUTUMN SHOW. Air Tyer brought up the question of holding an autumn show about March. Mrs McMurray considered such a show a great gamble. Everything depended on the weather. If the season was wet it would be a success. Mr W. Nye said that) the dryness of the season did not matter much now that there was a town water supply. The President suggested a trial show on a small scale in the Town Hall supper-room. Mr Murphy favoured the suggestion of holding an autumn show. The matter was held over, to he dealt with at a special general meeting, early in the new year. LATE ENTRIES. The secretary brought up the question of payment of late entry fees at shows. This had not been strictly adhered to in one case at the last show. The President said lie had been responsible for the trouble. An exhibitor had told him that she would possibly have some more blooms suitable for exhibition on the morning of the show, when entering other exhibits the night before. Wishing to make the. show as successful as possible, despite the adverse weather conditions, he had told her to bring them along at the ordinary entry fee. The exhibitor explained that she had mentioned on the night previous to the show that she might he able to find some more blooms suitable for exhibition in the morning but that she was not. prepared to pay the late fee in order to exhibit them. The President had told her to bring them along, which she had done hut had) only paid the usual fee. Mr AY. Nye considered that the rules should be adhered to. They provided that any late entries should he charged for at the late fee charge, 1/-. Others had paid late fees for exhibits and what was fair for one was fair for all. Mrs McMurray: If the rules are to be adhered to for one thing they should he in every ease. Continuing, she said that the rules had been broken in many ways during the past few years. Mr Nye: AYc have got rules and they should be abided by. The exhibitor agreed to pay the late fee and the matter dropped.
