LAYING TOTALISATOR ODDS.
—.—— HEAVY FINES IMPOSED. Christchurch, Decemb. 1. To-day James Fcaron, of Woolston, was charged, at Lyttelton, before Mr IT. .A. Young, S.M., with carrying on the business or occupation of a bookmaker. Six other •charges were preferred against Fcaron of laying bets in connection with the Waikato Hunt Club’s meeting, the Waverley Racing Club’s meeting. Accused pleaded not guilty.' The Magistrate found Fcaron guilty on two charges of laying to-, talisator odds, and inflicted, a fine of £2O on each charge. On four other similar charges Fcaron was convicted and was ordered to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months. The charge of carrying on business as, a bookmaker was withdrawn. Sergeant Mellolm staled that bookmakers on the; waterfront were ‘•making it too hot.” There were about four bookmakers on the walerfioiit, and Fcaron was the first to lie caught. Fcaron, lie would say, was quite respectable and honest.
