OVERLOADING MOTOR LORRIES

TWO FIRMS FINED. In the Feilding Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, charges Were preferred against the Highway Transport Go. of Palmerston N., and P. and K. Havill, also of Palmerston N., for operating their motor lorries in the Afanawatu County, the weight of the lorries and their respective loads being in excess of 10 tons and contrary to the Alotor Lorry Regulations, 1925. The Alanawatu County Council traffilc inspector (Air Wl Berry) prosecuted, and stated that he had weighed the vehicles on the FoxtonHimitangi road when the offences were detected. The county roads were not able to stand excessive weight. Maintenance cost last year to the County had been £l4B per mile, and this year it would be heavier. Convictions were entered in each of three charges against the Transport Co. and fines totalling £lO and costs were imposed. P. and K. Havill were fined £3 with 7/- costs. Following on the conviction of the lorry owners, the inspector withdrew charges laid against the drivers.
