Speaking at last night’s lecture in the Masonic Hall, Mr A. Seifert said that when he was in America some time ago. complaints had been made to him about the “tails” on New Zealand fibre. Tie was pleased to say that millers had greatly improved their hemp in this respect now.
Messrs J. Stevens, Carter and Catton were present at last night’s lecture delivered in the Masonic Hall by Mr A. Seifert on the hemp industry, representing the Palmerston N. Chamber of Commerce. Apologies for absence were received from Mr Cockayne, Agricultural Department, Mr W. Petrie, Chief Hemp Grader, and Air IT. L. Young, President of the Palmerston N. Chamber of Commerce.
J. W. Madden has commenced business as a grocer and hardware dealer in Moutoa Buildings. Air Aladden is well-known locally and was for some years connected with tbit grocery business of D. AY. Robertson and Co. The business will be conducted on a cash basis and the requirements of the public will be well catered for in all departments. Air Madden solicits a trial order and hopes to merit a fair share of local patronage.
Referring to the Yellow Leaf disease which swept through the flax areas of this country some time ago, a I last night’s lecture, ATr A. Seifert said that some people held that the scourge had previously visited llax areas. Speaking from a life’s association with the (lax industry, he could say without fear of contradiction that that was not so. Yellow Leaf, however, would ultimate! v do good as millers would cultivate plants that were diseaseresisting. Some plants were naturally immune from the disease and these could be selected for the purpose.
One of Foxton’.s former .Methodist ministers will be hoard at the local Alethodist Church to-morrow evening, when the Rev. R. Paine, of New Brighton, will be listened to per medium of wireless. Air Paine, at New Brighton, is conducting the Sunday School anniversary in connection with his church. Special singing by the children and choir will be rendered under the conduetorship of Air F. 11. Christian. The service will commence promptly at / o’clock. Visitors fretm other churches will be welcome at the close of their own services.
