OBITUARY.
* MR. F. PIRANI, AGED 66 YEARS
The death took place, at Wellington on Tuesday night of Mr Fred Pirani, aged 66 years. The late Mr Pirani was born in Victoria in 185!), the son of Mr 11. C. Pirani —afterwards editor of the “Hawke’s Bay Herald” —he arrived in Hew Zealand in 1864 and started life ns a “printer’s devil,” finishing his apprenticeship as a compositor on the “Wanganui Herald" in 1879. Mr Pirani removed to Palmerston X. in 1884 and in 1891 purchased the “Manawalu Evening Standard" and with his brother (the late Mr David Pirani) carried on that journal until 1903. He threw himself with irresistible energy and unquenchable enthusiasm into every movement that was afoot for advancing Palmerston’s welfare. In turn he was School Committeeman; Knight of Labour; member of the Licensing Committee, Borough Councillor; member of the Land Board; president of the A. and P. Association; member and then the chairman for thirteen years of the Wanganui Education Board; and for nine years Palmerston’s representative in Parliament. Later he unsuccessfully contested Wanganui against Mr AY. Veiteh in 1914, and Wellington Central against Mr Peter Fraser in 1919. After leaving Palmerston H. Mr Pirani successively controlled the Petoner Chronicle and the Feibling Star. Mr Pirani retired from public life some years ago and has since engaged in journalism in the Empire City.
