FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD.

MEETING OF BOARD,

The monthly meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board was held in Palmerston North on Saturday, Mr J. Linklater, M.P., presiding. Others present were: Messrs E. R. B, Holben, W. E. Barber, T. J. Clapham, and M. Mortensen. CORRESPONDENCE.

From Mr A. G. Dawick, secretary of the Foxton Beach Improvement Committee, forwarding suggested names of streets for the Manawatu Heads. The Committee, the writer added, were unanimous that the official name of the township should be as stated, as this was thought more appropriate than the Maori name. —Decided to hold the matter over to the next meeting. From the Board’s solicitors, advising that, at the sitting of the Manawatn-Oroua River Commission, the chairman had ruled that the Board could not be assessed for a contribution towards the proposed river works. —Received.

From the Foxton Borough Council, advising that the Board was liable to pay rates on a portion of land previously claimed as exempt because of the fact that it had been let or leasedHo a person or persons in no way connected with the Board or its works. —Matter to be adjusted. RAILWAY CHARGES.

Mr W. A. Marshall, railways busness agent, waited on the meeting, in reference to matters affecting the port of Foxton, and mentioned that the recent arrangements he had made with the local committee at Foxton regarding tallying of goods were, as far as he could gathei’, giving satisfaction. The Chairman asked whether any reduction could not be made in the freights charged from Foxton to Palmerston North, saying that recently the Department had lowered the charges between Wanganui and Mart on in order to meet motor competition. Mr Marshall replied that the business did not warrant a reduction.

Mr Holben disagreed, saying that most of the general merchandise for this district that was shipped to Foxton came up to Palmerston N. by motor lorry. Mr Marshall replied that he would make representations to the proper quarters.
