FOXTON BOWLING CLUB.
OFFICIAL OPENING. The official opening of the Foxton Bowling Club’s greens and Croquet Club’s lawns took place in beautiful weather yesterday afternoon. Visitors were present from all parts of the district and a most enjoyable time was spent on the green. Heavy rain on the previous night made the green a little heavy, but despite this fact, it was in very good condition. In officially declaring the ladies’ croquet green open for play, the President (-Mr M. E. Perreau) extended a hearty welcome to the visitors, and expressed the hope that they would have a- pleasant afternoon. He then called on Mr J. Linklater, M.P., to present the trophies won last year. The winners were as follows: —
Handicap Singles. —-First prize, Rev. Walton’s trophy, won by Mrs Moore; second prize, Mrs McMurray’s trophy, won by Mrs Owen. Points prize (for player securing most points in Handicap Singles competition, exdluding Ist and 2nd prize winners): Mrs Huntley’s trophy, won by Mrs Woods.
Half-hour Tournament (Club trophies) won by players securing highest aggregate points throughout the season: A grade, Mrs Owen; B grade, Mrs Ball. Mr Linklater, in presenting the trophies, said that it was an unexpected pleasure to be able to take part in the opening ceremony. He had come to Foxton that day to play Ibowls and had not anitcipated officiating at the opening. He congratulated the*club on the very fine afternoon it had for its opening ceremony, and commended the ladies on the condition of their green. The croquet lawn did the ladies credit, and it looked better than the men’s green. Mr Perreau said that the ladies had looked after their green on their own. They had organised various efforts to raise money for improving the green with the very pleasing result’that they all witnessed that day. Ml’ Perreau then called on Mrs R. Bryant (President) to play the first shot and officially declared the green open for play. Mr Perreau then declared the Bowling green open for play, and in doing so, said that the green was not as good as they had anticipated, owing to the rain, but he felt sure that it was just as good as any other in the district. He wished to take the opportunity of welcoming the two oldest bowlers in the Dominion. He referred to Messrs D. Whibley and Spring, who for many years, had been members of the local elub. (Applause). Mrs Perreau then threw up “kitty” and followed it with the first bowl of the season. The green was then declared open for play. During the afternoon play was indulged in with the following results :
