PRIEST ATTACKS SOCIAL EVILS.

A trenchant attack upon the social evils rampant in modern society was made in Auckland recently in a vigorous sermon delivered by the Rev. Father McCarthy in connection with the jubilee mission. His subject was “Scandal.”

“Who are those who commit the sin of scandal?” he asked. “All

those who, by their evil conduct, tend to lead others into sin.” Two sins were responsible for more ruin than probably all the others put together I —drunkenness and impurity. Wjhere disease slew its thousands, 1

drink slew its tens of thousands. “There is no more harm in having a drink than in breathing the fragrance of a rose, but some weak wretches cannot use it without abusing this gift of God. “But to women 1 would say, leave it alone altogether. 1 especially implore young women never to let men insult them by offering them strong drink. Such men have no honourable purpose. The man who tries to lure the steps of a maiden away from the paths of virtue is an assassin.”
