CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING.

The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce was held in Ross’s Rooms on Thursday evening, presided over by the President (Mr J. K. Hornblow). Also present were Messrs J. Newton, D. Christie, R. McMurray, I. Corn, Yeo, Jno. Ross, D. R. Barron and the secretary (Mr R. Hornblow). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs A. E. Admorc, H. Hornblow and G. F. Smith. A letter was received from the Minister of Justice, stating that he will let the Chamber know when it will be convenient for him to visit Foxton. LECTURE ON HEMP INDUSTRY.

Mr A. Seifert wrote accepting the Chamber’s offer to deliver a lecture on the hemp industry.

It was decided that the lecture be held in the Masonic Hall on a date convenient to Mr Seifert. IMMIGRATION.

The Minister of Immigration wrote acknowledging receipt of the Chamber’s request for the restriction of immigration during the winter months owing to the seriousness of the-unemployment. Mr McMurray said that stricter supervision of immigrants was also necessary by the Government. The President said that he had had dealings with the Immigration Department and had found that very strict and searching inquiries were made in connection with prospective immigrants. It was impossible for an unfit, person to pass the test required of him. Mr Barron pointed out that Sir James Allen was reviewing the wholq matter and it was decided to leave it in abeyance in the meantime. APPRECIATION. The President eulogised the efforts of the Manawatu Rabbit Board and its inspector (Mr D. R. Barron), and referred to the success of the Board in rabbit cradication since its inception. It was decided to write the Board congratulating if on its success in this direction. LADIES’ EVENING. It: was decided to hold a ladies’ evening, at which the President will give a leeturotte on his trip abroad. The date was left to the President to decide on.
