MUNICIPAL BY-ELECTION.
MR. A. P. EASTON WITHDRAWS NOMINATION.
Mr A. P. Easton has withdrawn from the by-election for a borough councillor to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Mr Wm. Adams, and the Returning Officer has declared the other candidate (Mr F. Lucinsky) elected to the office. To our representative, Mr Easton stated that he had ascertained the cost of an election would be between £ls and £2O, an'd as he thought.! this expense was not justified for the few months remaining for the present Council’s term of office, the general election being held in six months’ time. He also stated that he was not seeking election! but had* merely acceded to the Mayor’s request to allow himself to be nominated as up to the last hour no nomination had been received for the position.
