ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER
MAORI YOUTH TO.STAND TRIAL
Waipawa, September 28
A Maori youth, Ilori Ngatoro, was committed for trial to-day on a charge of attempting to murder an elderly man, Edward Grace Watts, at Olane, on September 6. Accused, in a signed statement to the police, admitted entering Watts’ house during the latter’s absence. He said that after taking food he lay down on a lied, where he was surprised by Watts. According to accused Watts punched him first and then they closed. Shots were fired during the struggle for possession of the gun, one entering Watts’s left arm and side. Accused stated that he had been an inmate of a receiving home in Napier.
The evidence of Watts went to show that as soon as he opened the bedroom door accused fired at him point-blank and that the second shot went off during the struggle.
