RUGBY FOOTBALL.

RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH. HAWKE’S BAY DEFEAT CANTERBURY. Though a huge crowd, estimated at 20,000, streamed on to the Lancaster Park, Christchurch, on Saturday, to see Canterbury meet Hawke’s Bay in the match for the Ranfurly Shield, the hopes of the Canterbury supporters did not run high. With the two All Blacks, W. Elvey (winger) and R. McGregor (fiveeighths) missing, the prospects for the Canterbury side seemed depressing, but the Canterbury forwards rose to great heights, and, largely through the vanguard’s efforts, the red and blacks were able to come within three points of beating the Shield holders, the final score being Hawke’s Bay 17,-Canterbury 15. The first try came after twentylive minutes’ play, Cooke passing to Grenside, after a good run, for the latter to score under the posts and convert. Corkill got the next at the corner, after a run along the line. Craven missed. Irvine buljocked over for the third try, from a serum 10 yards out. M. Brownlie missed. Canterbury’s first try was scored by Robilliard, who jumped high in front of the posts and dived over. Lillmrne missed. The score at halftime was Hawke’s Bay 11, Canterbury 3. Early in the second spell, Carleton goaled from a penalty. A few minutes later, Lillmrne potted from the field. Following up this, Cooke seized an opportunity, gathered the bouncing ball, which beat the Canterbury full-back, and dived over for a great score. M. Brownlie missed. Hawke’s Bay 14, Canterbury 10. Hawke’s Bay attacked hard, and Mill then worked the blind and sent Grenside over. The latter failed. The last try was scored in the corner by Doreen, which Lilburne converted. s PROBABLES V.
