MONTHLY SITTING.

The usual monthly sitting of the local S.M. Court was held in the Courthouse yesterday, before Mr R. M. Wfatson, S.M. LICENSING CASES.

John McKenna, licensee of the Manawatu Hotel, was charged with the illegal sale of liquor. Defendant, who did nof appear, pleaded guilty. Constable Owen, in evidence, said that at about 10 o’clock on the night of 14th August, he visited the Manawatu Hotel, entering the premises from the back yard. There he met a man named Mohekey, who was carrying a sugar-bag containing seven bottles of beer. Witness interviewed the licensee, and drew his attention to the fnet that Mohekey had beer in his) possession. Defendant admitted having sold the liquor tq Mohekey a few minutes previously. Defendant stated that Mohekey was a friend of his.

Defendant was convicted and fined £lO, with costs 9/-, the S.M. remarking that the Act provided for a fine of £lO on the first offence and £2O on the second. ILLEGALLY ON LICENSED PREMISES.

Michael Burn was charged with being found illegally on the licensed premises of the Manawatu Hotel on August 14th. Defendant did not appear.

Constable Owen gave evidence as to having found defendant on the premises after hours. _ When discovered Burn offered no excuse for being there. Convicted and fined £2 with costs 11/-.

Dan Kravanko was charged with being illegally on the licensed premises of the Family Hotel on the same date. Defendant did not appear. Constable Owen, in outlining the case against accused, said that on the night of the 14th August he visited the Family Hotel. Defendant was on the premises and, when questioned, said he was boarding there for the night. Some hours later witness visited the Manawatu Hotel and here, again, found defendant. This time he admitted that he was boarding at the Manawatu Hotel and not at the Family Hotel.

Convicted and fined £2 with costs 11/-. RIDING WITHOUT LIGHTS. G. H. Wright, who was charged with riding a bicycle within the borough after dark without a light, was fined 5/-, with costs 7/-. CIVIL CASE. Judgment was given for plaintiff in the following civil undefended ease: M. E. Perreau v. C. Nelson, claim £7 0/9, costs £1 10/6.
