John Brodie, 8.A., and Alec Leslie Haslam, L.L.M., have been nominated by the Canterbury College Professional Board as candidates for the Rhodes Scholarship. Owing to indisposition, Mr J. L. Stout was again unable to be present at yesterday’s monthly sitting of the local S.M. Court, which was conducted in his stead, by Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., of Feilding. Rev. A. L. Witheford, of Paraparanmu, is on a brief visit to this district and will conduct the morning service at the local Methodist Church to-morrow, and( also preach at Shannon in the evening. Rev. S. Peryman will conduct special gift Sunday services at Paraparaumu. The death is reported from Ekctahuna, of Mr Robert Murrell. Deceased, who was 72 years of age, was born at Cove, Hampshire, and came to Now Zealand with his late wife in the ship Laughoe, and lived in Eketahuna and district for nearly 45 years. He was one of the pioneers of the Forty Mile Bush.

The Marchese Girolamo, wellknown some years ago in New Zealand as Signor Norli, and a noted artist, died recently at Genoa, at the age of (10 years. At one lime he taught in the Dunedin School of Art. He was said to be a cousin of one of the Popes. While in Samoa, he painted portraits of R. L. Stevenson. The Marchese Girolamo, who was born at Sienna, had British blood in his veins, his mother being a Hamilton and his grandmother a daughter of Medwyn, a friend of Shelley. His wife was Cecilia Barron. There are many of his paintings in New Zealand and they are much valued bv their owners.

The death occurred’ at her residence at Carterton this week of an old and respected resident of the Wairarapa—Mrs W. F. Roydhouse. The deceased lady, who had been ill for the past four months, was born in Wellington, and after her marriage at Greytown, lived almost continuously in the Wairarapa —at Masterton, Greytown, Kahautara, Gladstone and, since 1903, in Carterton. She is survived by her husband and family of), three sons, and three daughters, namely: Messrs F. W. (Wanganui), R. W. (Carterton), and A. P. Roydhouse (Dunedin) and Miss E. Roydhouse and Mrs H. E. Jackson (Carterton) and Mrs A. J. Cooper (Mastertonj.. It is the privilege of few to be spared to even reach the century, but Mrs M. A. Wells,, of Wanganui, has eclipsed this record, for on Thursday she celebrated her 101st birthday. This remarkable lady is in full possession of her faculties, is also active and able to move about frequently among her relatives and friends. She discusses current topics freely and in addition has a wonderful store of information extending over a long and interesting career. One of her chief hobbies is knitting and, needlework. Mrs Wells was born at Erwell, in the county of Surrey, England, and .there she spent her early years. One of the incidents she can recall away back in the remote past was the tolling of the bells when King William TV. died. She also saw Queen Victoria before the latter came to the throne. Mrs Wells received a number of congratulations on the occasion of her birthday, says the Herald.
