BIBLE READING IN SCHOOL.
OPPOSED BY WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD.
Wanganui, Sept. 10,
The question as to whether Bible reading should be conducted in or out of school hours, was debated by the Education Board last night, when a sequel to the Board’s expressions of dissatisfaction with the practice at Hunterville, where Bible reading occupies half an hour of Friday’s time, came before the Board in the form of a deputation comprising Rev. J. C. Mill and Mr R. Dunklcy.
During a subsequent discussion, several members took exception to attempts to include Bible reading in the ordinary school curriculum. The practice, they contended, was contrary to the Board’s expressed desire. The Chairman, Mr Collins, said if Bible reading was desired, it should be done immediately before or after school, so that other children not interested could observe ordinary school hours. Mr W. D. Low (Palmerston N.) disagreed, seconding a proposal that the Hunterville arrangements he allowed to stand.
Mr IL Mclntyre (Feilding) characterised the Hunterville arrangements as unsatisfactory. He thought it was a case of cribbing by the clergy. When the matter went to a division the voting was equal, and the chairman gave his casting vote against the Hunterville system.
