TRAWLER AWARUA MISSING.
WARSHIP JOINS IN SEARCH.
Wellington, Last Night,
The non-arrival of the trawler Awarua at Wellington from the Chatham Islands has strengthened the belief that she was the vessel which advised the R.M.S. Makura on Tuesday night that her coal supplies were short. Search for the missing steamer continues. The Harbour Board tug Toia, in command of the DeputyHarbourmaster (Capt. J. Spence) has, not yet returned to port, and it has not been possible to establish any definite communication with her to-day as the tug’s wireless equipment is apparently not in working order.
To-day the Terawhiti, well-pro-visioned, has been dispatched from Wellington, and the Nora Niven has been sent from Napier, with instructions to make a thorough search in a southerly direction. Vessels approaching the New Zealand coast have been communicated with. The Department is doing all possible to locate the vessel. In addition several steamers on the coast are taking part in the search under instructions from the Marine Department. , As far as is known the Tamalia, City of Newcastle, and Kaimanawa are all actively searching for the missing Awarua. It is stated that there has been a heavy fall of snow at sea, lasting until this morning, and this has had the eit’eot of making visibility very bad. H.M.S. DUNEDIN TAKES UP SEARCH. Auckland, Last Night. H.M.S. Dunedin, which has been engaged in firing practice in .the Hauraki Gulf, departed to-day under orders to search for the missing steamer Awarua. AWARUA DISCOVERED. Messrs Levin and Co., Foxton, received word at noon to-day that the 11.M.5. Dunedin discovered the Awarua 300 miles north of Wellington on the East Coast, near Gisborne. No further particulars are yet available.
