WELL-KNOWN SHAREBROKER SHOOTS HIMSELF.
Auckland, September 14,
Hassell Garland, sharebroker, aged 30 years, shot himself in his office about 8.45 o’clock this morning When two young ladies engaged in Garland’s oiffi.ee arrived they found he had' collected his mail, but his door wast locked. Later they found a note on his desk: “Don’t open my door. Send for Mr. Knight.” Mr. Knight saw Garland lying on the floor of the office in a pool of blood, and communicated with the police, who burst open the door. In deceased’s right hand was a heavy revolver, and there was a large wound on his right temple. Life was extinct. Deceased was a most popular young man, and occupied a high place in social circles of New Zealand.
The deceased had been in business as sharebroker at Auckland for some years, had seen war service with the rank of captain, and was A.D.C. to Lord Liverpool when the latter was Governor-General of New Zealand. The contents of a letter addressed to Mr. Knight have not been made known.
