May fl say that these expressions of cordial sentiment will be a real source of encouragement in this my first Empire Conference.
I should also like to record my warm appreciation of the many messages ifrom the Maori race, wishing me God-speed. I can assure my fellow citizens that no effort will be lacking on my part to represent the Dominion worthily, and to give voice to what I believe to be priciples dear to the heart of the New Zealander, namely, pride in our race and loyalty to the Crown and the constitution.
On the many problems that will confront the conference I will bring to bear my best counsel and cooperation, believing, as I do, that unity of Empire is all important for the further prosperity of our people. 1} leave the Dominion feeling confident that its welfare will be in the safe keeping of my colleagues, fortified by the concerted effort and industry of its citizens.
