FATHER’S RIGHT.
PROTECTING HIS DAUGHTER. iChristcliurch, Sept. 14. “The father took up the proper attitude, and it is within his right to prevent the defendant associating with his daughter at least till she is 21 years of age. The defendant has a record, and it would be in the girl’s interest to give him up altogether. He will be sentenced to two months’ imprisonment,” said Mr. Young,i S.M., when dealing with Victor Slater, aged 20, who was charged with assaulting Richard John Martin. When Slater heard the sentence .he dropped his head low while the'girl concerned sobbed.
Detective Young explained that the defendant had been keeping company with the daughter of the informant, Martin. One night she had not arrived home by 9.30, and Martin went out to meet her. He saw Slater, and Slater assaulted him with a walking-stick and a pocket knife. The accused and the girl then ran away, but finally Martin got his daughter home.
