THE PASSING OF A PIONEER.
By the death of Mrs. Henry Ingle, at Marton, on Wednesday, yet another of New Zealand’s pioneers has been removed. Mrs Ingle, who was in her 86th year, was a daughter of the late David McEwan, of Palmerston NTorth. She was born at the Hutt in 1841, and in 1861 married Mr. John Lambert, and came to live in Rangitikei. Ten years later Mr. Lambert died, leaving his wife and two children Mr. John Lambert, of Hunterville, and Mrs T. T. Bartlett, of Tutaenui. Later Mrs Lambert married Mr| Henry Ingle, of Yorkshire, and from this union came a family of nine— Miss A. 11. Ingle, Messrs. S., A. J., W. A., H. A., and D. Ingle (all of Marton), and Mrs G Bennett (Mel bourne). Another son was killed in the war, and a still younger son died in his fourteenth year. The deceased lady came to be known throughout the district as “New Zealand’s pioneer mother,” she having brought up a family of 15 children, and devoted her time and care to each one. She gave them all a good Christian training, such as that 'from which her own life had been moulded. When she first arrived in Marton the area where the town now stands was a patch of toi toi and scrub. By sheer grit and dogged perserverance the settlers overcame their difficulties, and the fact that the prosperous town of Marton has grown up reflects on just such as the late Mrs Ingle.
