OBITUARY.
MR. JOHN COLLINS, AGED 73 YEARS. There passed away at his late lesidence, Jcnks St., on Saturday last, Mr John Collins, one of Foxton’s oldest residents, at the age of 73 years. The late Mr Collins had Loon ill for several months, and was for a period an inmate of the Palmerston N. Hospital. Deceased had been a resident of Fox ton for about 70 years. lie was born in Kent, England, and eame to (lie Dominion with his parents on the troop ship “Oliver Lning,” in 1855. His father was a member of tlie.GStli regiment, and was a Crimean war veteran. The late Mr Collins was a builder, and assisted in the erection of the old Parliament House at Wellington, and many of Foxton’s first buildings. As a young man deceased was an enthusiastic oarsman and was one of the original members of the Foxton Rowing Club inaugurated in 187!). Together with his fellow oarsmen he participated in many events at Foxton*, Wanganui and-Welling-ton and was (he last surviving member of the famous “Dolly Varden” crew.
The late Mr Collins is survived by bis widow, two brothers, Thomas, of Australia, James, of Manawatu Heads, and two sisters, Mrs J. Bun yan, of Inglewood and Mrs R. Wyley, of New Plymouth. The funeral took place at Foxton yesterday afternoon, Father Me- - conducting the services at St. Mary’s Church and at the grave side. Many old friends paid a last tribute of respect to deceased.
There passed away unexpectedly at Johnsonville on Thursday last, Mary Eleanor, wife of Mr Joseph Michel, and second daughter of Mr Thomas Cook, qf Foxton, aged 39 years. Deceased was born and educated in Foxton, where she was married about fourteen years ago, and was well-known locally. Deceased leaves a husband and four young children to mourn their loss. Mrs H. Satherly, of Foxton, is a sister of deceased. The interment took place at Ivarori (Wellington), on Saturday.
