MODIFICATION OF SCHEME SUGGESTED.
A general discussion arose Avlien the Immigration Department’s annual report of immigration Avas tabled at Thursday night’s meeting of the Foxton Chamber of Commerce.
Mr Christie said that according to the figures presented, 7,000 odd immigrants were brought into NeAV Zealand last year. Unemployment Avas apparent and the Government should be approached and requested to ease off immigration, at least during the winter months. Immigrants Avere being brought into the country and yet avc Avere unable to find work for our OAvn people.
Mr Corn supported Mr Christie’s remarks. There Avas too much labour and not enough (capital being brought in, he said. Me MeMurray said practically one-fifth of the immigrants Avere people Ave did not need.
The President (Mr J. K. HornIiIoav) said that NeAV Zealand could stand a population of 10,000,000. At present the population stood at about 14 million. There was too much land locked up at present which should he (closer settled. iCloser settlement meant, greater production Avhich, in turn, meant increased exports. Closer settlement of the land Avas the vital point.
It was decided to urge the Government to modify its immigration scheme owing to the seriousness of unemployment, especially during the Avintcr months.
