LICENSING AMENDMENT BILL
THIRD ISSUE TO REMAIN,
REFERENDUM ON THREE TO SLY YEARS’ POLLS.
The Licensing Amendment Bill was brought down and read a first time in the House on Tuesday night after a bombardment of questions. It; is the general opinion of members that* the Bill will not go through in its present form if at all, during the present session. The Bill provides a number of minor amendments of the law relating to the conduct of licensed houses and provides for increased accommodation .for travellers and hoarders; the regulation of the number of private bars with fees proportionate to the number of bars permitted; the third issue (State Control) will still remain on the ballot paper; provision is made for a referendum to decide whether the licensing poll will be taken every three or six years, a bare majority line way or Ihe other to decide the issue. The Bill is a non-party measure and will be strenuously opposed by the Prohibition Party, as at present drafted.
