OBSTRUCTING THE FAIRWAY.
♦- FLAX REFUSE IN THE MANAWATU. INSPECTION BY PUBLIC WORKS ENGINEER. The Foxton Harbour Board has been concerned for s'ome time with (lie problem of preventing flax re-, fuse from mills being dumped in the Manawatu River. The said refuse causes obstructions in the river channel which is detrimental to shipping. It is further stated that such refuse is a menace to the fishing industry. The Board’s jurisdiction over the fairway extends from the river mouth to the Whirokino Bridge, and as.mills operate beyond this limit the menace would still exist unless it applied to all mills. The Board has been in communication with the Marine Department, and Acclimatisation Society. The former have control beyond the Board’s limits and the latter have powers under the “Fisheries Act” but do not operate in the Board’s'area. The .Marine Department communicated with the Public Works Depart meat and the later deputed one of its engineers, Mr Sharp, in conjunction with Mr Johnston, to inspect and furnish a report on the subject. These officers, accompanied by Captain- Larsen (Pilot) and the Board secretary (Mr Rangihcuea) made an inspection of the flaxmills on Tuesday within and beyond the Board’s jurisdiction, and a report will be furnished to the Marine Department and Board at an early date.
