BOOKMAKERS FINED.

Auckland, August 18. Charged with laying totalisator odds, in that lie made a bet with a constable on the Nursery Handicap, run at Takapuna on January 14, Richard Masters, for whom Mr. J. J. Sullivan appeared, this afternoon pleaded guilty when brought before Mr. Poynton S.M. Chief Detective Cummings told how a constable had made several 5s bets with Masters in the W'aitemata Billiard-room, and one horse, Vera, had wonj. Defendant had paid out, and also returned the money on a non-starter. There was no suggestion that defendant had been betting in a big way, or that he had not paid his liabilities. Mr. Sullivan asked that defendant he treated leniently, ‘ stating that since the offence in January Masters had not done any further betting. He had been in a very small way, and had always paid. The maximum fine was £2O, but counsel asked that a smaller fine should be imposed. His Worship: “I’ll make it £ls, and allow a month in which to pay. SECOND LAPSE COSTS £IOO. Dunedin, August 17. At the Police Court Walter Henry Thurlow was fined £IOO for bookmaking. Accused was fined £75 for a similar offence in 1922. He had been rabbiting but lost his block and came to town. He admitted that ho had been bookmaking for the last 1 three months.
