MYSTERIOUS SHOOTING AFFRAY CLEARED UP.
WOUND ACCIDENTALLY INFLICTED.
Wellington, Last Night. Investigation into the Puni shooting mystery, conducted by the police, under Detective-Sergeant O’Brien resulted in the victim, Mervyn Hoe, making a truthful statement. He says the affair was a pure accident. A short time ago he borrowed a .22 calibre Winchester rifle from a neighbour. On Tuesday night he went out to a shed where the weapon was hanging, to clean it. When doing so it exploded, the bullet entering his chest above the heart. He was not aware that the bullet was left in the rifle. In view of the nearness of the heart, he became afraid that people suspect him of doing it wilfully, so concocted the fictitious story he gave to the doctor and police. The owner regained possession of the rifle before the police arrived. The police are prosecuting the investigation.
