GIRL SWIMS THE CHANNEL IN RECORD TIME.
'TRIUMPH OVER CURRENTS. London, Afigust 6. . Miss Gertrude Ederle, the American swimmer, succeeded in swimming the Channel. She swam from Cape Gris Nez to Kingsdown (Kent north of Dover), taking 14 A hours, which is record time. Miss Ederle was helped by a flood-tide lasting seven hours, which, with a strong south-wester behind it, gave her a long drift upChannel.
Miss Ederle’s time is easily a record, the next best being Sebastian Tiraboschi’s 1G hours 23 minutes, on August lltli, 1923. Miss Ederle, who is only 18 years old, has been a swimmer since she was a child. She attempted to s\yim the Channel last year, but was not successful. A WORLD CHAMPION.
Miss Ederle, who has the distinction of being the first woman to swim the Channel, is one of the finest swimmers in the world. She holds the world’s .record for women for the following distances: 150 yds; 300yds, 3min. 38 3-ssee; 400 metres, smin. 53 l-ssee; 440yds, smin. 54 3-ssce; 500yds, Gmin. 45 3-sscc; 500 metres, 7min 22 l-ssec; 880yds, 13m in. 19sec. Five men have swum the Channel . They are : Captain Matthew Webb, swam from Dover to Calais in 21h. 45mm, August 24th and 25th, 1875. T. W.
