MOUTOA DRAINAGE BOARD.
INSPECTION OF FLOOD DAMAGE. Members of the Moutoa Drainage Board visited the damage done by the recent flood on Mr. Smith’s property, a narrow strip which runs parallel with the Poplar road at Moutoa, on Saturday. There were presen: Messrs. ,1. Chrystall (chairman), W 7. E. Barber, R.Bryant, B. G. Gower, and K. Easton. Mr. J. Linklater, M.P., who was making a tour of the flooded area throughout the electorate, was also present during the inspection. 'About five chains of banking which had been recently erected by the Board at a cost of £IOO, had been completely washed away and a channel cut into Mr. Smith’s pro perty for several chains, which if not immediately banked would let the next flood waters through in great volume on to the properties opposite the Poplar road, which would result in a considerable area being inundated. All the metal on the Poplar road was scoured off, silt and debris deposited and fences destroyed. A new section of banking near Mr. Smith’s residence was also destroyed. The Board decided to take immediate temporary measures to check further erosion at the spot alongside the Poplar road.
