No serious cases of influenza have been reported locally although colds are prevalent.
Accounts amounting to £853 9s lid were passed for payment at last night’s Borough Council meeting.
At last night’s Borough Council meeting the poundkeeper reported that during the month six head of stock had been impounded and driving fees to the amount of 5/- collected.
The influenza epidemic is on the wane in Wellington. Two deaths, are reported from Ashburton and, 25 cases of pneumonic influenza with eight deaths are reported'from Auckland.
The Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perrcau) who, last week was a victim to the prevailing epidemic, was able to preside at last night’s Borough Council meeting.
At last night’s Borough Council meeting the thanks of the Council was tendered Mrs Beceonsall, and Mr W. Nye for gifts of library books, Mr. A. Francis for presenting notice cards and Rev. Walton for selecting library books.
The Rev. Frank McDonald conducts his final services as minister of the local Presbyterian church on Sunday next. He is to be tendered a farewell social on Friday evening.' His induction to (he Pahiatua charge will take place on the 28th insl.
Those present at last night's Borough Council meeting were: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perrcau) and Crs. ]\fcMurrav, Woods, Thompson, Winstnnley, Rand, Parkin, and Walker. An apology for absence ' was received from Cr. Adams.
The Animal Welfare League is organising an “Animal Welfare Week” front .July 25th to July 31st. On July 25th clergymen are asked to preach it sermon on the duly ot kindness to animals and Sunday School teachers to make some reference to the subject in their clas-
The Mayoress (Mrs Perrcau) on visiting the Council Chamber subsequent to a meeting of the city fathers, noticed that the floor was strewn with cigarette ends and ashes. With female instinct for tidiness she purchased and donated a set of ash trays for the Councillors. The action of the mayoress was suitably Acknowledged by a vole of thanks from the Council.
The question of providing suitable chairs for the now Town Hall was again before the Borough ■ Council last night. The merits of various chairs, leather samples etc., were given lengthy consideration and Councillors even went to the extent of applying considerable “elbow grease” to the red leather surface of a sample chair with the hope that it would shed some of its colour. The absence of the bulkiest “city father”’ from the meeting prevented any finality from being reached on the question as Councilors were doubtful whether “Bill” would be able to fit into the chair decided upon. The Mayor and Town Clerk were deputed to make further investigations.
