SERVICE CARS.

AND LICENSE FEES. At last night’s Borough Council meeting, the Mayor (Mr. M. E. Perrcau) said that lie had been approached by a ratepayer who complained about service ears that were coming through the borough stopping and picking up passengers.and not paying a license fee to the Foxton Borough Council. This was a sore point he said, with local taxi drivers. Or. Walker said that one service car stood in Main St. daily from 0.30 a.m. till noon waiting for passengers. Those cars should he put on an equal footing with local cars who pay license fees to the Council. In. his opinion the service cars plied for hire locally. Cr. Woods said that the service cars had starting and finishing points, and they paid their license fees at the starting point. He did not think, anything could he done to make them take out licenses locally. Cr. Winstanley said that each service had a booking office locally. Cr. Woods said that if a service car was compelled to take out a license locally then it would also have to obtain a license in all the boroughs through which they passed. Cr. Walker; They do not stop as long in other towns as they do here. Cr. M'cMurray said that under the Highway’s Board scheme if a license was paid in Foxton or Levin the local Council would get its fair share of the amount, but in the case of long distance ears the local body did not get a cent out of it. The Clerk said, that the licenses issued in any town were good for the whole Dominion. Cr. McMurray considered the car services were doing the town a lot of good. They were taking the place of the Main Trunk line, and were advertising the town. It was decided to make enquiries as to the liability of the service car owners to take out a license for picking up passengers in the borough.
